Foundation celebrating ground-breaking of ambulatory care clinic expansion

(Saint John) - The Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation hosted a ground-breaking ceremony celebrating the start of construction for the Ambulatory Care (Clinic 1) expansion to be named The J.T. Clark Family Foundation Ambulatory Clinic on March 3, 2023.

After more than two years of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an extension renovation of the ambulatory clinic at Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) is set to begin. The expansion will include the Mohs Micrographic Surgery Clinic, IV Day Clinic, Casting Clinic, four procedure rooms and eighteen exam rooms. It is expected to begin serving patients in spring/summer 2024.

Planned Updates to SJRH’s Ambulatory Care Clinic

Clinic 1 is the busiest clinic at Horizon’s SJRH and has not been updated since 1982. The renovation and expansion will enhance patient care and allow procedures previously performed in the operating room (OR) to take place in the clinic as day surgeries.

Steen Knorr Architecture Incorporated has envisioned a functional, welcoming space that will be more than double its size. The project will transform a 7,000 square-foot space into 14,700 square feet, improving accessibility, privacy and patient comfort while also being flexible to adapt to future healthcare needs.

Renovations will allow for more space, better patient flow, and a modernized approach to patient care for over 40,000 patients across Atlantic Canada annually and ensure the clinic can meet future patient volume demands, expected to be 46,000 in the next five years.

“This exciting redevelopment project aligns with our plan to improve health care in New Brunswick, specifically in improving access to services, patient flow and the overall patient experience,” said Margaret Melanson, Horizon’s Interim President and CEO. “I want to thank the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation staff and donors for their exemplary efforts in bringing to life this new space where our staff and physicians will provide quality care to our patients and clients.”

Expansion Made Possible Thanks to Donor Generosity

In 2017, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation embarked on its most ambitious campaign to raise $12 million to expand and renovate Clinic 1. Four years later, the Foundation celebrated the successful close of the campaign thanks to the overwhelming support we received from our lead donor, the J.T. Clark Family Foundation Inc., and other major donors, Horizon Health Network employees, and the community at large.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we want to celebrate our supporters who made this possible. The $12 million raised is a combination of donations secured through the generosity of foundations, corporate partners, individuals, and events, reflecting the community’s power in transforming health care for patients across the province,” says Jamie Gallagher, President & CEO of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation.
